National Vocational Qualifications (or NVQs for short) are Qualifications that recognise the COMPETENCE of an Individual. They are a measure of whether an individual is able to apply their skills and knowledge to the tasks they are expected to perform within the work environment. Each individual is assessed to determine whether or not they meet a national standard that is defined within the relevant qualification. They can also be considered to be a measure of the effectiveness of an Organisation’s training.
Each Individual is required to compile a portfolio of evidence, which is then assessed by an NVQ Assessor. The portfolio should include a range of evidence and here are some examples of types of evidence:
- Observation by a Qualified NVQ Assessor
- Video of appropriate activities
- Photographs
- Work Product (for example documentation that is naturally produced through performing a task)
- Questions and Answers
- Witness Testimony
- Personal Statement
- Professional Discussion
An Assessor who has achieved a relevant NVQ Assessor Qualification assesses NVQs.
The whole qualification is Quality Assured by an Internal Quality Assurer who is appointed by the Organisation responsible for the Assessment.
NVQs are recognised by both employers and regulators and are fully transferrable.
